The Stars moved to Dallas from Minnesota for the 1993-1994 NHL season, and have since established themselves as one of the premier team in the National Hockey League. On October 5, 1993, Texas welcomed the Dallas Stars, after flirting with the name of the Lone Stars, as the state's first NHL team. The club has gone on to win seven division championships, two Western Conference crowns, two President's Trophies as the league's best regular-season team, and of course, the 1999 Stanley Cup. Additionally, the Stars have reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 11 of the 13 seasons in the Lone Star State.

The club is extremely proud of the growth of hockey in North Texas since the team relocated to Dallas. There are eight Dr Pepper StarCenters located throughout the Metroplex, and each facility offers all levels of hockey at all ages, as well as figure skating and learn-to-skate classes. There were only 250 children playing hockey in the Metroplex when the Stars came to town, with no travel or high school teams. Today, there are over 7,000 North Texas kids playing the sport, with countless travel teams and 70-plus high school hockey clubs.

Nickname

Originally named North Stars for the Minnesota State motto, the name was shortened to Stars upon moving to Dallas, since Texas is known as the Lone Star State.
